かたわら means doing a secondary activity alongside a main one over a period of time. Attach it to a verb's dictionary form or a noun with の. The main occupation comes first, and the other is pursued in parallel.

• 彼かれは会社かいしゃで働はたらくかたわら、小説しょうせつを書かいている。

  Kare wa kaisha de hataraku katawara, shousetsu o kaite iru.

  Alongside working at a company, he writes novels.

• 勉強べんきょうのかたわら、ボランティア活動かつどうもしている。

  Benkyou no katawara, borantia katsudou mo shite iru.

  Besides studying, she also does volunteer work.
