in; at; on (formal)

において marks the place, time, or domain in which something occurs, a formal equivalent of で. Attach it to a noun; the modifying form is における. It is common in writing, ceremonies, and academic contexts.

Examples

• 会議かいぎは大だいホールにおいて行おこなわれる。

  Kaigi wa oo-hooru ni oite okonawareru.

  The meeting will be held in the main hall.

• 現代げんだい社会しゃかいにおける技術ぎじゅつの役割やくわりは大おおきい。

  Gendai shakai ni okeru gijutsu no yakuwari wa ookii.

  The role of technology in modern society is large.
